The Prophecy
22 years ago Karen and I were at a crossroads in our lives. Our 8 years with the San Antonio Spurs had just ended with the retirement of David Robinson. My two business partners decided to go in a different direction and leave to start a different business venture. What was our next step going to be.
We prayed and felt led to do something radical. We flew to Albuquerque, rented a car and began driving on a “right or left adventure.” It was based on the verse that says, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” - Isaiah 30:21 NIV
We turned right and headed north led by that voice. We eventually made it to Monte Vista, Colorado for the night making several prayerful turns along the way. We had never been there. The next morning as we pulled out of the parking lot we prayed “right or left” for a breakfast spot. McDonald’s was to the right and an old fashioned dinner to the left. We both heard left. We were seated next to two couples that were discussing “The Purpose Driven Life.” We made small talk with them and found out they were from a small town in Louisiana near where I was born. I told them we were on an adventure with God to discover where the next chapter of our lives would lead us. Somewhere in there I said that I was an author and had just finished my first book.
After we ate, I went to the car while waiting for Karen. I heard a tap on my window and one of the ladies said that we were supposed to come stay with them at their mountain cabin about 30 miles up the road. Karen came out about then and we discussed it. Knowing they were believers, we said yes. Their beautiful new modern log cabin had a huge inlaid marble cross on the wooden floor welcoming guests as they walked in. They told us that they built this house for people in ministry, especially authors, needing a place to hear from God!!!
We had a glorious time out of time evening of cooking Italian food and sharing testimonies. The next morning she asked if she could prophesy over us. We said yes. In the midst of that overwhelming anointed time she said this. “Your book will be a big success, but the most important and successful book you will write will be on parenting.”
Inside I wanted to run. The last thing I felt qualified to write about was parenting. I loved everything she said that morning but knew she might be way off on that. Like many I felt inadequate and insecure about that topic though I loved my girls and tried my best to be a great father. My thought was how pretentious would it be for anyone to write a parenting book. But I kept it in my heart.
Yesterday I contacted the husband 22 years later and let him know that I’m finishing up a book called, Raising greatness. We hadn’t spoken in years but I wanted him to share that with his wife. He said that she was now physically and mentally incapacitated (most likely late stages of dementia) but he would share. He didn’t know if she would be able to process it.
I later received this message, “when she heard, she smiled.” I’m assuming she doesn’t respond to many worlds these days. It made my heart warm and I thanked God for the trip we took, the miracle of meeting them, the anointed prophesy, and the 22 years God needed to prepare me for the writing of this book. And it all started by taking God at His word. It is my hope that some of you out there would go on a great “left or right” adventure someday soon with the Holy Spirit. It changed our lives. Until next time…
